The Military Association of Atheists and Free Thinkers is planning to petition the Department of Defense to allow for atheist chaplain, according to Fox News.
The request is set to go out Tuesday, although the association refused to comment on the matter and instead referred inquiries to FoxNews.com.
The organization would like to have its president, Jason Torpy, serve as the first atheist chaplain.
However the same representative in Congress who opposed the creation of such a position last year, John Fleming, said that he’s aware of the revived push and is now “very concerned” about it.
The Department of Defense has refused comments on the issue of allowing a so-called “humanist” chaplain.
Democrats have already tried to create this position in the past. In 2013 they tried to pass legislation to create the post however Republicans offered legislation that would prevent the Pentagon from creating it which was passed in July.
