The chairman of the Federal Election Commission has issued a dire warning regarding the intent of Democrats to silence conservative media outlets, something he says he will fight to the end.
FEC Chairman Lee E. Goodman warned that with the growing voice of conservative news outlets, especially on the internet, lawmakers are trying to remove the exemption from federal election laws that govern political organizations.
“I think that there are impulses in the government every day to second guess and look into the editorial decisions of conservative publishers,” Goodman, a Republican who will serve as chairman until December, said.
“The right has begun to break the left’s media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications,” he added.
All media has enjoyed the exemption from the FEC rules which allows them to promote their favorite candidates without limits or disclosure requirements like political action committees are required to do. Goodman believes that this exemption should be protected at all costs, even for conservative media, because he sees “the future going to the democratization of media largely through the internet.”
Realizing that it’s now possible for the smaller media outlets to compete with the “big boys,” Goodman said that he has seen “storm clouds that the second you start to regulate them, there is at least the possibility or indeed proclivity for selective enforcement, so we need to keep the media free and the internet free.”
With the IRS and other agencies being used as political weapons, why would anyone believe the same wouldn’t then happen with the FEC?
Goodman said he’s already seen examples of the FEC trying to regulate conservative media like the Citizen’s United movie division and Sean Hannity’s radio show, however the efforts to lift the exemption were voted down along party lines with Democrats voting in favor of the regulation.
“The picking and choosing has started to occur,” said Goodman. “There are some in this building that think we can actually regulate” the media. He continued, saying if that occurs “then I am concerned about the disparate treatment of conservative media.”
He added, “Truth be told, I want conservative media to have the same exemption as all other media.”
It’s no secret that ever since the Citizen’s United decision Democrats have done everything they can to suppress conservative voices to give themselves the advantage in elections. With such a move it would only be a matter of time before a liberal was appointed to head the FEC and conservatives were targeted, yet again, by another government agency.
