State Representative Timothy Horrigan stood on the New Hampshire House floor on May 7 and argued against legislation that would prohibit the use of EBT cards to buy firearms. The base of his argument? It would be “a blatant violation of the Second Amendment.”
According to Breitbart, SB203 also would prohibit anybody who receives public assistance from using their EBT card, or cash they obtained with it, to gamble or purchase tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, lottery tickets, firearms, or adult entertainment. Additionally it would prohibit using the card or cash obtained with it for tattoos and body piercings.
Horrigan, a Democrat, argued that:
“The firearms ban is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment. Cash benefit recipients presumably have the same rights as the rest of us to purchase guns for hunting, sports shooting, or even self-defense. Obviously they don’t have much money to spend on that, but they do have the right under the Second Amendment to do so.”
He also noted that since so many of the bill’s sponsors were “pro-Second Amendment” that he thought it was “ironic” that they added the firearms bad in it.
It’s rather odd that he’s using the Second Amendment in such a manner considering for all intents and purposes Democrats argue against it whenever they can. That’s where the true irony lies, not in banning the purchase of firearms with taxpayer money, wouldn’t you say?
The mere fact that legislation like this is even necessary should make everyone think twice about what exactly the purpose of public assistance is. It’s not, and never was intended to be, a subsidy on life so that those who receive it can spend the money on whatever they damn well please. It’s supposed to be temporary supplementation of the basic necessities one needs to survive, and that’s it.
Should people be allowed to purchase the listed items with taxpayer-funded debit cards or would you like to see even more restrictions placed on them? Let us know with a comment!
