On May 12 at the Queen’s Head Pub in Memorial Hall at the esteemed Harvard University, The Satanic Temple will be holding a Black Mass at an event held by the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club.
The communion host will be non-consecrated, according to the spokesman for The Satanic Temple, Lucien Greaves.
“While Black Masses are supposed to utilize a consecrated host, ours is merely representative of a consecrated host,” Greaves said. Further explaining that his group doesn’t actually believe in or invoke the supernatural.
Greaves said that Black Mass is more about personal freedom against what they believe to be an overbearing authority from the church, adding that members of The Satanic Temple will provide narrations to the audience about the historical significance of the Mass as it happens.
“To us, the Black Mass is an amalgamation that developed through time based on witch-hunting fears and later adopted by some as a declaration of personal Independence against what they felt to be the stifling authority of the church,” said Greaves.
Admission to the Mass is free, and flyers placed around the campus depict a goat-headed, Satanic figure that’s standing at an alter surrounded by damned souls. The flyers state that the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club will be hosting “a reenactment of a satanic black mass performed by The Satanic Temple ** with commentary and historical context **.”
The Queen’s Head Pub is located in the basement of Memorial Hall which was dedicated in 1878 as a memorial to those who died fighting the Civil War. The pub was completed in 2007 and is 12,000 square feet and will hold up to 450 guests.
Harvard was founded in 1639 through a financial gift from a Protestant clergyman named John Harvard. In its earlier years, it was known for training Protestant ministers who would go on to serve at various New England Christian churches.
The group performing the Black Mass is the same group who’s trying to get a monument of Baphomet, which is Satan, installed at the Oklahoma Statehouse.
Greaves said of the monument of Satan that “Our monument will stand in honor of those unjustly accused, the slandered minority, the maligned out-groups, so that we might pay respect to their memory and celebrate our progress as a pluralistic nation founded on secular law.”
Sounds more like they’re just trying to kick Christians in the face, wouldn’t you say?
Are they going to far or should this be allowed, let us know with a comment!
