Earlier today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, a Democratic Senator from West Virginia praised a prominent Klan leader and deceased Democratic Senator Robert Byrd.
Joe Manchin explained to the host that “We looked up to Robert C. Byrd for fifty years” in the short segment. “What he was able to accomplish and the people who basically depended on him in West Virginia,” he added.
For those unaware, as the DailySurge points out, Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan at the age of 24 then rose through the ranks and eventually became a leader of the hate group. Byrd was a committed racist and spent years espousing his anti-minority views across the nation. One famous quote he said to a fellow racist by the name of Theodore Bilbo, another Democrat, was “I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
Byrd also joined in with other Southern Democrats to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964, speaking against it for 14 hours and 13 minutes. Even as recently as 2001 he used the term “white n*gger” twice during an interview.
Byrd was well known as a segregationist Democrat for most of his career, and his position within the KKK pretty much solidified his racist views. Additionally, Byrd was made a party leader by his fellow Democrats, a position he held until his 2010 death.
So will liberals across the nation try to eviscerate Manchin as they would any conservative who praised such a person? Not likely, and what’s even less like is this even making it into any other media other than conservative. The double standard when it comes to issues of race is astounding and we’ll never be able to explain why Democrats always seem to get a pass in situations like this.
All we can do is point out the hypocrisy and hope for the best.
