Oprah has somehow managed to wriggle her way amongst the ranks of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when it comes to race baiting. The Left however seldom view it this way as they refer to a black woman saying something entirely racist as “mild race comments.”
Remember back when Oprah was asked whether or not she believed race played a part in Obama’s abysmal approval ratings? She responded with slapping the interview with this:
“Has it ever crossed my mind?…Probably it’s crossed my mind more times than it’s crossed your mind. Just the level of disrespect. When the senator yelled out, ‘You’re a liar’—remember that? Yeah, I think that there is a level of disrespect for the office that occurs, and that occurs in some cases, and maybe even many cases, because he’s African-American.”
Anybody unbiasedly looking at the situation would be quick to note that Oprah is calling out, albeit not all, Republicans as racists because they disagree with Obama. Now, for some reason, disagreeing with a black man is racist solely because of the color of his skin regardless of what he’s saying.
Racism is exactly what happened when Oprah said those remarks as it specifically acknowledged race and a disadvantage that one race has compared to another – surely if a black man shouted that a white man was a liar, we’d hear nothing from Oprah.
However, when the Left speaks on the matter, they chalk it up to just more hysteria from the right going over the top or trying to level the playing fields of race baiter (although that’s not what they call them) claims.
Just take it from Jamelle Bouie of The Daily Beast, who was quick to say that, “Oprah Winfrey tries as much as possible to avoid controversial subjects.” The response is laughable.
It would be nearly impossible to count all the times Oprah has cried foul when it comes to race as she certainly loves the spotlight and seeing how her network is just about to crash a burn, she’ll take the camera when she can get it. Having to maintain appearances that live is a constant struggle, Oprah has never been one to, “avoid controversial subjects” especially when it comes to herself or her skin tone.
Remember when she screamed racism from the rooftops over a purse saleswoman over in Italy? The Left went just about nuts, and come to find out, she was lying all along and even went so far as to offer a formal apology. But what was heard from the Left? Crickets – nothing. Brush it under the rug.
Bouie goes on to share that, “She isn’t saying Republicans oppose Obama because of his race.” Readers at this point are most certainly scratching their heads as that is precisely what she is saying. Saying that anyone who disagrees with Obama (i.e. calling him a liar) is doing so because of racism is no more ridiculous that Oprah’s cries for attention.
Now, Bouie does mention that, “That the first black president is also the first to have his State of the Union address interrupted is significant, Wilson’s intent regardless.” Here we have something we agree on – at least in part. Interrupting the president – no matter his race – is disrespectful on all accounts, but why is there always a need to bring race into it? Surely other presidents have been interrupted, but because this one’s black automatically makes it racist?
You see the point yet?
The Left continues to bring race into the conversation time and time again, not because it’s relevant, but because it’s necessary – for them at least. Leaning upon it as a crutch during intellectual debate and using it when you have nothing sensible left to say, makes you as big a bigot as those you claim to oppose.
The Right has always fought against racism – we freed the slaves, we fought tooth and nail for Civil Rights and we still aim at race equality. The fact of the matter is, (some) blacks like standing atop the suffering of their ancestors in order to demand whites owe them something.
You want to be equal? Then start acting like it and stop giving ultimatums that you would consider racist if coming from any other skin tone.
