According to reports, terrorists ended up with massive amounts of weapons that were intended for the Libyan rebel fighters since the beginning of the nation’s uprising in 2011.
Current members of the intelligence community along with former senior military officials told TheBlaze that the weapons were provided to the rebels with strict approval from the United States during the 2011 civil war, but ended up in the hands of al Qaeda and may have even played a role in the Benghazi attacks.
In addition to what the U.S. officials said, a 2014 United Nations released a report that revealed “most arsenals continue to be controlled by non-state armed groups and governing institutions have very limited capacity to control Libya’s borders, ports and airports, which contribute to the overall insecurity in the surrounding region and within Libya.”
A separate report from 2013 from the U.N. found that both the UAE and Qatar had breached an arms embargo with Libya and allowed weapons to flow into the nation.
“Some 18 months after the end of the conflict, some of this materiel remains under the control of non-state actors within Libya and has been found in seizures of military material being trafficked out of Libya,” it said.
One of the former U.S. officials said that the Obama administration didn’t do much in the way of preventing the arms from flowing into the war-torn nation during the initial uprising and that there wasn’t enough boots on the ground to figure out where the weapons shipments were going.
They said that if Obama had wanted to put pressure on Qatar to not ship the weapons he could have, but he refused. “Instead they turned a blind eye or chose not to get involved. The problem was that some of these weapons were landing in the hands of bad players in the region and that’s the biggest concern.”
According to Rear Adm. Chuck Kubric, shortly after the uprising is when it was first known that members of the rebels had links to al Qaeda. Kubric is a member of the Citizens’ Commission on Benghazi, who seeks to reveal the truth about what happened during the attacks.
Kubric said that “Information started to surface in other media about the terrorist element that was within the rebels and about how we had to be very, very careful about who we were supporting.” He also explained that he wasn’t the only one to realize the links, saying ”Even [former NATO top commander] Adm. [James] Stravridis went before the Congress and alluded to an intelligence summary that he had received that had indications … of rebels who were actually terrorists.”
While testifying in front of the Senate, Stravridis said that “We are examining very closely the content, composition, the personalities, who are the leaders of these opposition forces … we have seen flickers in the intelligence of potential Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, we’ve seen different things.”
Even after the testimony, Kubric said that Obama signed a directive that said the U.S. was to support the Libyan rebels along with arming them. “Now, if I knew that these rebels were terrorists and had the links, he certainly had to know that.”
Kubric also said that Obama had ignored Ghadhafi’s offer for a truce prior to the NATO airstrikes in the nation, which sent it into chaos and harmed America’s national security objectives in the region. Days after the offer was rejected, Kubric said that the NATO airstrikes were the beginning of the turmoil that led to the deaths of four Americans on September 11, 2012.
According to TheBlaze, “A U.S. businesswoman who had access to senior Libyan officials and provided information as a paid informant for the CIA and FBI, said she was asked to provide intelligence on various rebel leaders and their actions while she was conducting business in Libya. Speaking to TheBlaze TV’s For the Record and going only by the pseudonym Annie to protect her identity, she said the Obama administration was aware that $500 million of the $1 billion in weapons delivered in shipments from weapons dealers in the Persian Gulf were being taken by members of Al Qaeda.”
Her statement was later confirmed by both current and former officials who are familiar with America’s Libyan operations.
She said that al Qaeda leader Ahmed Abu Khattalah would have greatly benefitted from the weapons, he’s also wanted by the U.S. government now. She also said that it took her less than 24 hours to figure out that it was indeed a terrorist attack and not based off a video, like we were told.
“I reported not only was it a terrorist attack, it was executed by Ansar al-Sharia, and that some of the individuals involved in executing the attack had come from the rebel opposition and that this was a significant terrorist event,” she said. Apparently that was reported all of the way up through the U.S. intelligence channels within 24 hours as well.
Ansar al-Sharia came about when the Gadhafi regime fell and has since tried to implement strict Shariah law across the nation. They also have known ties to al Qaeda.
However even knowing all of this, it took until January of 2014 for the State Department to add three chapters of Ansar al-Sharia to their list of designated global terrorists, along with the leaders of the group.
Included in the mix with Ansar al-Sharia was a group called the Martyrs Brigade, which was the largest and most well armed militia in the nation, which Annie said was a deadly mix. They had been working closely with “Khattalah’s brigade” that had been comprised of Ansar al-Sharia in Benghazi.
“So you have rebels coming from two brigades that came into existence as a result of the revolution comprising the individuals in Ansar al-Sharia in Benghazi who executed the attack of the U.S. facility and the death of the Americans,” she said.
“Why would the United States government allow any rebels to have knowledge and position on the U.S. facility of these types of sensitive security issues when some of the rebels are tied to a terrorist organization, Ansar al-Sharia, who ultimately executed the attack?” she said, before adding an explosive charge.
“I believe that explains why the rebels who executed the attack, the terrorists, were so able to know exactly where Chris Stevens was. It was an inside job.”
