The owner of the NBA team L.A. Clippers had recently been caught making some highly controversial and racially charged remarks to his girlfriend that sent the nation into a name-calling frenzy. Well now it has been revealed that the NAACP is scheduled to give the staunch Democrat supporter their Lifetime Achievement Award.
This isn’t the first time that racism has been an issue with Donald T. Sterling, however. He was sued by a 22-year employee who was also a basketball star named Elgin Baylor in 2009. It was thrown out of court, however Sterling did have to settle in a housing discrimination lawsuit after that.
With these latest allegations, it’s hard to believe that the NAACP had already awarded Sterling with their Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2009 and a President’s Award in 2008.
His recent comments caused the president of the NAACP’s California State Conference, Alice Huffman, to release a statement saying:
“If these allegations are proven true, we are extremely disappointed in Mr. Sterling. Recent remarks like these, and those of Cliven Bundy, remind us that racism is not a footnote of our past, but a reality of our present that we must confront head on.”
“For 105 years, the NAACP has fought against the culture bigotry that leads to the comments like those we heard on the recording, and as public response to these remarks has shown, we have made significant progress.
“As the investigation is in progress, we urge the LA Branch of the NAACP to withdraw Donald Sterling from the honoree list at its upcoming Gala. We also suggest that African Americans and Latinos should honor his request and not attend the games.
“If true, these are very hurtful remarks and Mr. Sterling, whose team talents and fan base is majority minority, should offer an apology to Californians.
“At the conclusion of the investigation into the alleged comments, if true, we seek further redress from Mr. Sterling.”
The Clippers organization is now denying that the recording is reflective of Sterling’s beliefs and said that they’re investigating to see if someone may have doctored the recording to make him look bad. They’re even trying to claim that it maybe someone that’s involved with a lawsuit.
“We do know that the woman on the tape — who we believe released it to TMZ — is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Sterling family alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told Mr. Sterling that she would ‘get even.’”
One thing is for certain, he’ll more than likely end up getting a pass for his remarks because he’s a proud Democrat supporter. Had this been a conservative, he wouldn’t even be a team owner any longer, nor would he be able to leave his home because people would be threatening his life and his family.
We’ll see how this plays out.
