A company in Colorado has unveiled the first of its kind vending machine that dispenses marijuana in Eagle-Vail, Colorado.

The dispensary named Herbal Elements rolled out the “Zazz” machine to the public outside of Montana’s Smokehouse barbecues restaurant in Avon this past Friday.

The machine is produced by the company American Green, which is owned by Steve Shearin, who delivered the machine themselves. The company is proud of their machine and said “Many people could look at this and say that’s just a vending machine, and they’d be right but mostly wrong.”

Which is true, the machine uses the latest technology that requires users to swipe their licenses in order to verify their identity and age. Then multiple cameras that are attached to the machine use advanced biometrics, like facial recognition, in order to make sure that whoever swiped the license is actually the same person who’s depicted.

“They would swipe their driver’s license at which point multiple cameras would allow us to use some advanced biometrics to make absolutely certain that the person who swiped the card is the owner of that card,” Shearin said.

Greg Honan, who owns Herbal Elements is excited about the machine and looks forward to the benefits it will provide his company.

“We’re looking forward to using the ZAZZ machine to easily track all this inventory … we’re gonna eliminate the middle man. It’ll go straight from the budtender right into our machine. There’s no room for theft by patients, employees … there’s no way to lose track of the inventory,” he said.

Both companies are excited about the possibilities of what can happen now that the machine has been put into use.

Steve Shearin said that “I don’t think we’ve dreamed what it can do yet, and that’s the whole point. You start with this and you start making your way into the future. I think this is a great starting point, and we’re excited about it.”
