A recent series of photos that were released shows a new push from liberals for women to stop shaving their underarms in protest to conventional standards of beauty.
Photographer Ben Hopper out of London recruited models and actresses to grow out the hair under their arms so he could photograph them for his “Natural Beauty” series. His aim is to push women against conforming to society’s standards for being attractive.
He said in an interview with the Huffington Post that “The whole point is contrast between fashionable female beauty and the raw unconventional look of female armpit hair.
“I expect [the photos] will surprise a lot of people and I guess, in a way, that is one of my intentions.”
Hopper is one of many who believe that the standards of beauty for women is far too engrained in society and he hopes to push women away from them. He also said that he’s actually a fan of women rocking the natural look.
“As I matured as a person and an artist, I realized I liked [armpit hair],” he said.
“I think it can be a beautiful look.”
His website delves further into his beliefs about unshaven underarms, and explains his intent behind the series.
“Although armpit hair is a natural state it has become a statement. Why is that?” he asked.
“For almost a century we have been brainwashed by the beauty industry, encouraging hair removal. Natural Beauty could be classified as a type of protest.
“By creating a contrast between common “fashionable” female beauty and the raw unconventional look of female armpit hair, thoughts are intrigued and a discussion is made,” the photographer explains.
