The staff in one of Great Britain’s oldest pubs believes they have captured a ghost on their CCTV camera.
The creepy footage shows what appears to be a figure of a shadow flickering in and out of view right next to the bar.
The manager of Ye Olde Man and Scythe in Bolton, Tony Dooley, had spotted the apparition after checking the recorded video on the morning after the cameras mysteriously stopped recording at 6:15 a.m.
According to the Manchester Evening News website, Dooley said “I came down and saw a glass smashed on the floor so I was instantly suspicious and went to check the CCTV and found it has stopped working.”
“We checked the footage and it revealed this figure.
“To be honest I was a bit concerned – I’m a bit of a sceptic when it comes to ghosts but you become more of a believer when you see things like that.”
The pub’s location dates back to 1251 and is the fourth-oldest pub in Great Britain. Legend has it that the Seventh Earl of Derby, James Stanley, is who haunts the place. He was a royalist whose family owned the pub.
As the story goes, Stanley spent the last hours of his life in the pub prior to being beheaded towards the end of the civil war in 1651.
The last chair he ever sat in is still inside the pub to this day, it was the one who enjoyed just prior to being taken outside and executed.
Along with Stanley, it’s said that there were hundreds of other civilians and soldiers who were executed right outside the pub in the Bolton Massacre of 1644 and one of those people is said to be a woman who hung herself in the cellar.
There’s also another story of an eight-year-old girl who was killed there and an alleged “phantom dog.”
It’s because of the bloody history of the pub that people believe it to be a hot-spot of sorts for the paranormal, and the attached video helps to provide some sort of proof of that. There was also a clairvoyant who visited the pub in 2006 and claimed there to be at least 25 different spirits haunting it.
Dooley said that “There have always been rumors it is haunted and we’ve had psychic readings done here in the past.
“Occasionally you hear things and wonder if it’s just the building settling down or whether it’s something else.
“It’s the fourth-oldest pub in Great Britain so it’s had its fair share of deaths and whatnot.”
What do you think, does this provide some sort of solid evidence of a haunting? Let us know with a comment!
