Another teacher is behind bars today after being discovered to have been carrying out a sexual relationship with at least two separate students. As she taught as a health teacher at an Alabama school, it appears as though she may have been offering extracurricular sex-ed lessons.
LaTangela Williams, 36, recently plead guilty to having sex with two students attending Selma High School in Selma, Alabama. According to reports, police waited outside Williams’ classroom last April until her class concluded before placing her under arrest.
After being taken to jail, she was formally charged with, “having images of a juvenile engaged in obscene acts and having sexual contact with a student,” and, “enticing a minor for immoral purposes and solicitation of a child.”
According to local NBC affiliate, WSFA, one of the students was a member of the basketball team, but both the student’s names are being withheld to protect their identity. Williams was given a deal, that she willingly accepted in face of going to trial.
Williams, as per the deal, will be in jail for 14 months and then be subject to the following three years of probation. Along with this, she will be stripped of her teacher certification making sure she never teaches in a classroom again.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson expressed his content in the plea deal saying, “This gets her out of the school system. It should show that we are not going to let anyone get away with touching school children.”
The former health teacher is expected to surrender herself next week, “after completing some family matters,” to begin her sentence. Willaims’ defense attorney Theron Stokes noted, “We felt like it was in her best interest to accept the plea deal.”
Stokes went on to say, “We wanted to get this behind her and move on. We intend for her to do well in the future. This is not a reflection on the school system, but of one employee’s mistakes.”
Although many are glad she was punished with jail time, some do not feel as though the punishment was strict enough. Chief Administrative Officer of the Selma City School System Larry DiChaiara described just that when he spoke to reporters.
“While I am pleased with the outcome, Ms. Williams is very fortunate to receive the sentence that she received.” DiChaiara stated. “While I am pleased with the outcome, Ms. Williams is very fortunate to receive the sentence that she received. In addition to the sentence, based on the criminal charges and her plea of guilt, she will also have her teaching certificate revoked and never be able to work with children again in our schools.”
The administrator concluded, “It is my hope that this verdict sends a strong message to anybody who is entrusted with our children that this kind of behavior will never again be tolerated.”
