On Thursday the Senate Majority Leader told reporters that he thinks Congress needs to refocus on expanding the federal background check system for gun purchases.
Reid, who’s known for blatantly lying and intentionally misleading people, was speaking in response to questions from reporters regarding the Fort Hood shooting that claimed the lives of three soldiers earlier in the week. The shooter was identified as Army Spec. Ivan Lopez, who was a 34-year-old truck driver for the military said to have behavioral and mental health issues.
The Nevada Senator used the opportunity to again mislead people and act as if Lopez had somehow purchased his gun illegally or because of some loophole.
“As I was told today, this young man bought his gun a day or two before he killed these people,” Reid told reporters. “Couldn’t we at least have background checks so that people who are ill mentally, or who are felons, shouldn’t be able to buy guns? Even NRA members, a majority of them, support that so I hope we can bring it back up.”
Unfortunately for Reid he has just been caught in another lie. Law enforcement officials speaking anonymously said that Lopez had legally purchased his .45 caliber pistol from the same store that Maj. Nidal Hassan purchased his, Guns Galore. Which means that Lopez went through the same background check that Reid’s failed gun control bill would have required, since the law didn’t expand the scope of the checks, it only expanded who would be subjected to them.
It’s no secret that Americans are not fans of his, and other Democrat’s, efforts to increase gun control which is why every attempt at it so far has been an utter failure. Yet Reid continues to push for more government control over our Second Amendment rights and will use any tragedy as a means to his desired end, which seems to be more like a national registry than anything to do with keeping people safe.
He also told reporters that he wanted to bring the failed bill up again for a vote but admitted that he “needs some more votes.”
Take the hint, Harry, nobody wants your gun control.
Do you think the Democrats idea of “common sense” gun control would be effective in helping to reduce violence or is it just a backdoor means at a registry? Let us know with a comment, we love to read them!
