Quite the unfortunate incident occurred at Austin, Texas’s South By Southwest festival where several people were injured and a few killed. The series of events happened after a drunk driver attempted to evade police and ended up careening through the festival taking out anyone in his way.
In all, one man and one woman have died because of the driver’s careless acts and has left another 23 victims hospitalized. 5 of the 23 injured have been declared in critical condition. The event began this morning at around 12:30 a.m. where, at another location, a police officer had spotted the man at a gas station and attempted to pull him over.
After weaving through a series of parked cars, the driver was said to flee at an extremely high rate of speed. Taking off going against traffic on a one way street, the drunk led police on a high speed chase as they approached the festival location.
Hardly avoiding a uniformed police officer that was working at the event, the driver smashed through the temporary barricade and started taking out people. The two unfortunate souls that were killed were together on a moped. Running down 23 others, he was only stopped after crashing his car into a taxi where he then permanently crashed his vehicle.
Trying to leave the wake of bodies in his past, the driver then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. He was eventually caught by a pursuing officer.
Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo explained that the victims consisted of festival goers as well as patrons leaving from a nearby club. Prior to the incident, the streets were full of passersby, but police had fortunately cleared the streets explaining it was a fire lane.
Acevedo relayed, “We had a large crowd. I just thank God that a lot of the folks had already been pushed on the sidewalk or this could have been a lot worse.” He went on to tell the public, “We do these events very well, but you cannot stop a person who rather than face drunk driving charges decides to speed at a high rate of speed, go around a uniformed officer forcing him to run out of the way, then at a high rate of speed show total disregard for the sanctity of human life.”
Victims lucky enough to survive were all brought to surrounding hospitals and tended to. The drunk driver was arrested and is currently being charged with, “two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.”
