An extremely shocking video is going viral after a man was shot by a South Carolina police officer while simply trying to grab his cane.

The incident occurred February 29th at 7:30 p.m. when Deputy Terrence Knox pulled over the vehicle of 70-year-old Bobby Canipe because of an expired license plate.  Instead staying in the vehicle however Canipe got out of the truck and walked towards the back.

The officer’s voice becomes increasingly strained as he begins to yell “Sir,” multiple times.  Canipe then reached into the bed of the truck and pulled out his cane.  Knox claims that, from the distance he was standing, it appeared to be a shotgun.

Canipe even inadvertently points the end of the cane in Officer Knox’s direction prompting an obscenity and Knox to open fire.  Firing approximately 5 rounds, one sinks into Canipe’s gut and sends him doubling over.

As Knox continues to demand the elderly man drop the shotgun, Canipe states that he can’t and it’s a cane.  Realizing the mistake he made, Knox rushes over and immediately calles for EMS.  Canipe’s wife, now out of the truck adds intensity to the situation as she is visibly and understandably upset.

As other officers arrive for backup, Knox completely loses it.  He is heard crying, trying to justify his actions as to why he opened fire.

Canipe was then said to be transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently recovering.

Sheriff Bruce Bryant released a statement to the press saying, “The situation is very unfortunate. It does appear, at this time, that Deputy Knox’s actions were an appropriate response to what he reasonably believed to be an imminent threat to his life; however, a full internal investigation will be conducted.”
