Alabama Democrat Alvin Holmes made an outrageous claim on the floor of the Alabama House of Representatives the other day when he said that white people would force their daughters to have abortions if they were impregnated by a black man.
The debate was surrounding a new law being proposed that would outlaw abortions after the fetus had a fetal heartbeat, which generally speaking happens when a woman is six months pregnant.
Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin sponsored the bill that would still allow abortions past that point if there were abnormalities, dangers to the mother, or fear of stillbirth, however it excludes rape and incest.
The same representative that called Justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom” because he married a white woman made a very extreme and hateful remark in response to McClurken’s comparing her own efforts to Brown v. Board of Education and saying that she personally hopes that Roe v. Wade would be overturned.
“Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion,” Holmes said. “On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.”
Holmes still hasn’t backed down from his attack on Thomas which has prompted criticism from all over the spectrum, claiming that he doesn’t realize the true meaning and lesson behind the famous novel from the Civil War.
David Webb, from Breitbart.com said that “Anyone with an honest thought process would see that [the name ‘Uncle Tom’] is not an insult,” he then added that it’s “just used as one by bigots.”
It should be noted that in the book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the character of Uncle Tom was heroic in his efforts to stand against the attacks and oppression from the slave power then rise above it all. Then again, how can we expect someone who’s obviously racist to understand that to rise above it you have to let it go?
