Carl DeMaio is hoping to change the face of the Republican Party with his new campaign ad that depicts him holding hands with his male partner.
The video, titled Carl DeMaio: New Generation Republican, has DeMaio and his partner gleefully holding hands and at one point shows them draped in the rainbow flag, which has become the national symbol of gay rights. In the ad a voiceover says that “He believes in equality and diversity and is a defender of our personal freedoms.”
The video is intended to promote his policies and not to promote his openly gay lifestyle, DeMaio says. He said that many straight politicians ads feature their spouses, dogs, and even children so he doesn’t see why this should be such a big deal. He claims the ad is to show his personal side as well as what policies he has in store.
The ad was released ahead of his upcoming run for the House of Representatives against incumbent Scott Peters for the Southern California seat. He’s a former city council member and lost a mayoral race against Democrat Bob Filner in 2012.
DeMaio said the support he’s received on his Facebook page has been outstanding, saying “WOW- The national news coverage of our ‘New Generation Republican’ video has resulted in an AMAZING outpouring of support over the last 24 hours.”
“I’m so very grateful for the warm and positive thoughts – and I know I speak for thousands who wish to see the ‘New Generation’ have a chance to transform politics. I know we can do this,” it went on to say.
He’s vowing to shake up politics and break old loyalties with his new ad and style of campaigning and despite the negative attention he’s received by appearing with his partner he says that his focus is on fiscal issues rather than social.
