Aiden Jose Cruz was in for a surprise when he decided it was a good idea to be abusive to his girlfriend in a public corner store. The 21 year old was tackled to the ground by bystanders and held down until police arrived on the scene and arrested him.
Cruz and his girlfriend were at the Flower Street Market in Bakersfield, California when the incident occurred. An argument over something escalated into Cruz assaulting her, prompting her to run away for her own safety. She ran into the market hoping to find cover but Cruz pursued her and continued to abuse her once inside.
Security footage uploaded by the owner of the market to YouTube shows a crowd of bystanders hesitant to intervene, however after just a moment or two the people in the store grabbed Cruz and wrestled him to the ground, holding him there until police arrived. Deputies arrived shortly after the store clerk dialed 911.
Ray Pruittr, the public information officer for the Kern County Sheriffs Department said that “Deputies were dispatched to the market regarding an assault in progress… The suspect at one point had his hands around her neck and started choking her then began striking her on the head.”
He said that “when deputies arrived, the suspect was being held down on the ground by several customers inside the store… Deputies were able to handcuff him and take him into custody without incident.”
Cruz’s girlfriend, who’s name is being withheld because she’s the victim of domestic abuse, escaped the incident without any serious injuries.
Cruz is being held on $50,000 bond for spousal battery and has a hearing in Superior Court scheduled.
