In a recent poll by Louisiana democrats to see who would be most likely to defeat sitting senator Mary Landrieu (D) on the republican side a surprising name ended up at the top of the list, even polling better than Landrieu herself. Phil Robertson from the hit show Duck Dynasty is who the people of Louisiana would like to see run, and most likely defeat, Landrieu.
If you remember, the patriarch of the Robertson clan came into light recently when in an interview he spoke of his beliefs about religion, nearly costing him his job on the show. A outpouring of support came from people across the nation demanding his reinstatement to the show and threatening an all out boycott of the network it airs on, A&E. Their cries were effective and Robertson was reinstated within two weeks.
Such support could only help him should he decide to embark on a political career. The people of his home state overwhelmingly supported he and his family and that support would almost certainly carry him straight to Capitol Hill, if he wanted to go that is.
His oldest son Al, who only appears on the show occasionally and is himself a preacher like his father, said in an email to The Hill that his father would much rather focus his efforts on religion rather than politics.
“While Phil is humbled and honored so many fellow Louisianans have so much confidence in him, he has no interest in running for public office,” he said.
“He is interested in helping the electorate know more about the gospel of Christ, so they, in turn, can elect more godly men and women to serve and lead our great country.”
Robertson had a 4 point lead over Landrieu in the poll with the next closest republican candidate, Rep. Bill Cassidy, trailing her by 1 point.
