Laura Bush: First Ladies Don’t Deserve A Salary

January 31, 2014 2:53pm PST

As humble and timid as former First Lady Bush may appear to be to average American citizens, she recently made a statement that may just prove them wrong.  Talking about sex and income equality, she stated that she believes the First Lady—whomever it may be—does not deserve a salary.

Speaking for an upcoming series on C-SPAN, “First Ladies: Influence and Image,” Bush gave the comment that gave a bit of insight into her beliefs.  She states, “There are plenty of perks, believe me. A chef. That was really great. I miss the chef.”

She does however state that “life upstairs,” is surprisingly normal.  Bush explains that it’s not out of the ordinary to see the First Lady lying on the couch and reading a book.  She even used herself as an example by stating, “In my case, my cat would always curl up next to me.”

She then shifts her conversation between the differences of the President and his–or potentially, her—spouse.  She conveys, “I think the American public sees the first lady in very glamorous circumstance.”

Jokingly adding a bit of commentary she then goes on to state if there were to be a First Gentleman he would have to learn to, “Stand back and be quiet.”  She went on to add that in all likelihood the media—as they do with First Ladies–would “cover every inch of how they look, what they wear, and maybe even their weight.”

Steering the conversation just a bit more she manages to bring up sex equality between men and women—income equality between men and women mainly.  She states that the First Lady does not deserve a salary for her title.

Bush mentions that it will be interesting to see if and when a man becomes the first ever First Gentleman if he will stay at his current position or give it up, but she believes it should be the same in his case as well. She continues by saying, “That’s what we’ll have to come to terms with. … Certainly a first gentleman might continue to work at whatever he did.”

But just because a woman’s husband was elected to be the President of the United States in no way means she deserves any form of compensation.  Perhaps she was talking about Obama whining a little while back about Michelle not getting paid.

Speaking in public Obama mentioned, “I want to make sure that when she’s working she’s getting paid the same as men. I gotta say that First Ladies right now don’t [get paid], even though that’s a tough job!” Of course we have come to expect this kind of freeloading attitude from the Obama’s, but just because they want it doesn’t mean they’re going to get it.

And the fact that Laura Bush of all people, came out to say that First Ladies don’t deserve a salary makes it all the better.
