A 16-Year-Old student is left confined to a wheelchair complaining he still can’t walk after an encounter with police earlier this month. Allegedly, police unwarrantedly placed the boy in handcuffs and patted him down, during which time a female officer managed to rupture one of the boy’s testicles.
Darrin Manning was getting off the subway with fellow basketball teammates of The Mathematics Civics and Sciences Charter School Of Philadelphia Inc., when they were stopped by police. On their way to a basketball game, it appears as if one of the boys had made an agitating remark to police officer Thomas Purcell when he began to approach them.
As the officer confronted the boys they all ran off, but Manning stayed claiming, “I didn’t do anything wrong,”—apparently a belief not shared by police officers. The cops quickly placed the boy in handcuffs where they patted him down in search for drugs and/or weapons.
Manning explained what happened next:
“I felt her reach, and she grabbed my butt. And then she grabbed and squeezed again and pulled down. And that’s when I heard something pop, like I felt it POP.”
As the police officer—that was female for some reason—prodded around his private area, she grabbed a hold of his scrotum and yanked until his testicle ruptured. He was then detained for the next 8 hours where he didn’t complain or report any injuries to police—I wonder why.
After picking up her child, Manning’s mother then took him to the hospital where he had to undergo emergency surgery. When the doctors came out, they informed his mother that she needed to press charges on the police department. They also informed her that her son may not be able to have children in the future.
Now at first, I was a bit skeptical as there are always two sides to a story, but the boy seemed to be a model student. Manning had straight A’s and didn’t have a single disciplinary action on his school record. Along with this, and IA investigation has been launched into the officer’s actions.
It seems as though it would have to be an intentional effort in order to rupture a man’s testicles but what do I know?
