Bakery That Refused Wedding Cake For Gay Couple Gets Harassed By Gays, Forced To Close Down

Earlier last year, we reported of a bakery that was being forced to make a cake for a lesbian couple despite the bakery owner’s own religious beliefs. Being forced to either bake the cake, pay a fine, or close down entirely, the couple that owns that bakery is claiming, “We still stand by what we believe.”
The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, Aaron and Melissa Klein, thought nothing of it when they politely declined baking a cake for a lesbian couple’s–Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman—wedding because of their religious beliefs. After all, businesses have the right to refuse service to anyone and they are protected under the freedom of religion, right?
The lesbian couple was so offended that they took up a lawsuit on the bakery claiming they discriminated against them because of their sexual orientation. The courts ruled in the lesbian’s favor saying, “Under Oregon law, Oregonians may not be denied service based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”
The courts continued to explain their reasoning by stating, “The law provides an exemption for religious organizations and schools, but does not allow private business owners to discriminate based on sexual orientation, just as they cannot legally deny service based on race, sex, age, disability or religion.”
The couple was then harassed by gays and “tolerant” liberals so bad that they were forced to close down their business. When the story broke in 2013, Melissa explained to The Blaze that they were already threatening to do so. She conveyed, “They’re already planning to harass me. They’re just continuously doing this. They just don’t want me to be in business at all.”
They now work out of their home but the harassment hasn’t stopped. Someone has even gone through the trouble of breaking onto their private property to rummage through their work truck. Melissa claims, “Somebody came up into our driveway and rummaged through our truck and took stuff out. The really strange thing is, they didn’t steal anything, they just made a mess. It kind of was a little creepy.”
Despite all this, Aaron and Melissa Klein just aren’t having it. In a recent interview, Aaron told reporters, “We still stand by what we believe from the beginning. I’m not sure what future holds, but as far as where we’re at right now … it’s almost as if the state is hostile toward Christian businesses.”
Their next step is to try and reach a settlement with the lesbian couple. If they cannot reach an agreement, “the bureau may bring formal charges and move the issue to BOLI’s Administrative Prosecution Unit, responsible for processing contested civil rights division cases pursuant to the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) and BOLI contested case hearing rules.”
After all that had gone on, Melissa simply asked that the public, along with her 12,000 Facebook followers, to continue to pray for her and her husband. She wrote, “To all of you that have been praying for Aaron and I, I want to say thank you. I know that your prayers are being heard. I feel such a peace with all of this that is going on. Even though there are days that are hard and times of struggle we still feel that the Lord is in this. It is His fight and our situation is in His hands.”
For people claiming to be discriminated against so much, you would think that they would be a little more accepting of other’s beliefs. Although it may not align with theirs, it would only make sense that they, of all people, would understand and practice the true “tolerance” that they preach.
What do you guys think—was the court wrong for ruling in opposition of the baker’s religion? Let us know in a comment below!
