A mother is dead today after she tried to warn her children to get out of the ocean because it was lightning. As she approached the water line, she herself was struck by lightning causing her instant death.

Rosangela Biavati, a 36-year-old married mother of one, was on vacation in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  During that time, the 13 member family had decided to go to the beach for the day.  It was reportedly sunny when the family arrived at the beach but within mere hours, a storm began to roll in.

The woman’s husband, Leandro Lopes Santos, explained, “The weather started to close in and we decided to leave. I was putting our bags into the car, and the kids were on the beach.”

At this time, his wife went to wrangle the kids—the couple’s 11 year old son and nephews– in who were still swimming in the ocean.  As the pictures show, Biavati was trying to flag the kids down waving her arms as she approached the water.

Soon after setting foot in the water, she was struck by a single lightning bolt that immediately stopped her heart. Her husband said, “The next minute my wife was lying on the floor. I received a mild shock.”

As her husband dragged his wife’s lifeless body onto the shore, other people flooded in to try and help.

Elias Biavati, the victim’s brother, explained that, “When I saw my sister she was already lying on the ground and people were trying to revive her by massaging her heart.” The family could only look on in horror as the realization set in that nothing could be done.

Elias Biavati stated, “We are in a state of shock. My brother-in-law is devastated by the sudden death of his wife. We can’t believe how it happened – it could have been any one of us.”

A nearby café owner, Arionaldo Garrido, stated that he immediately knew when things went awry.  Saying that the shop had already brought in their tables and chairs as several bolts had shot through the sky, they were concerned for the tourists still at the beach.

He explained, “Suddenly we heard a loud bang and saw several people running. We knew that something terrible had happened. It’s a real tragedy for the family who have lost a wife and mother.”

It is reportedly not a rare occurance for storms to come on so quickly and violently in the summer months.  Climatologist Rodolfo Bonafim says that, “There is a high incidence of lightning now because of an increase in heat and humidity.”
