New York Cop Suspended Over Anti-Obama Rant: “Go Die In A Shallow Grave You Muslim Commie”

A policeman in Pleasantville, New York was suspended recently over “racist” comments about President Obama he posted on Facebook. But should he have been?

The local paper somewhat hyperbolically called the cop’s Facebook comments “a racist, obscenity-laced rant about President Barack Obama on his Facebook page.” A review on what he wrote is a bit less outrageously outrageous than the newspaper’s claim. What he wrote certainly wasn’t a good idea, but it was hardly as the paper described it.

The cop, officer Peter Burns, was suspended after his bosses found out about the postings.

According to the paper, here are the two posts that the cop wrote:

“The fact that he [Obama] is still alive bewilders me,” Officer Peter Burns is alleged to have written in the post, obtained by The Journal News on Thursday. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie …”

First of all, there was nothing strictly “racist” in either post, nor were they really “rants.”

They were both one-liners, one was anti-Muslim, but neither mentioned any race at all so calling it “racist” is idiotic.

Still, Police Chief Richard Love (seen left) and Mayor Peter Scherer have characterized the officer’s comments as “racist.” But the fact is, in these released comments, it is obvious that officer Burns did not make a “racist” comment. Muslim is not a race. It is a religion, a creed, a political concept. It has nothing whatever to do with race. Every sort of “race” on earth has Muslims.

But here is the key fact in this story that makes this officer’s suspension a bit shaky: the Facebook page that the officer posted his admittedly ill-advised comments on was set to private. The citizens of Pleasantville, New York could not see his comments unless they went to the extra step to ask to be his friend and he approved them. In essence, he made these comments in private.

Now, is it a good idea to have an officer of the law talking about how he thinks Obama should have been killed? No. That is what they should have suspended him for. Not any non-existent racism.

The “racism” charge is simply stupid.
