NATO forces reported that the craft and its occupants were attacked by militants after the craft fell, but they are saying that there was no enemy fire before the crash.

Still, Taliban forces have claimed credit for downing the craft.

The helicopter went down in the Shahjoi district of the Zabul province, according to deputy governor Mohammad Jan Rasulyar.

It is difficult to operate air craft, especially helicopters, in the high, sandy mountainous regions of Afghanistan.
