A well liked student in Baytown, Texas was fatally shot by a university policeman in an incident that many of the student’s friends say is suspicious.
Cameron Redus, 23, was shot by campus policeman Corporal Chris Carter, 35, of the University of the Incarnate Word Police Department in San Antonio after, police say, the student became combative after a traffic stop.
Cameron Redus, shot by campus police.
As ABC reports, “Investigators say at 2:30am, an officer stopped Redus near the UIW campus for allegedly speeding and driving erratically. That officer–Corporal Chris Carter–got into a scuffle with Redus, and for reasons still undisclosed, fired several rounds, killing him.”
One witness that heard the incident says that he heard Redus say in a sarcastic manner, “Oh, so you’re going to shoot me?” Then, seconds later, the witness says he heard gun shots ring out.
Witnesses also say they never heard police yelling or identifying themselves before five or six shots” were loosed at Redus.
Friends of the fallen man say that the actions police ascribe to him don’t sound like anything he’d do.
“He’s not an aggressive person at all, so the story just doesn’t really make sense to any of us,” said Sarah Davis, one of Redus’ friends.
“Cameron was the sweetest, kindest, gentlest person,” said Cameron’s friend Annie Jones. “So compassionate.”
The university issued a statement saying, “Baytown Christian Academy is saddened by the news that a former student and the child of one of our employees was shot and killed in San Antonio last night. Our hearts and prayers go out to this young man’s family.”
Authorities say that the Texas Rangers have been called in to assist locals to investigate the shooting to see if it was justified.
