In a speech addressing President Obama’s health care mandate, Dr. Ben Carson bypassed one hundred and fifty years of U.S. history, claiming that “Obamacare is the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.”
Dr. Carson gave his view on the Affordable Care Act during an address Friday at the Values Voter Summit in Washington D.C., according to The Washington Times.
“It is slavery because it aims to make all of us subservient to the government,” he said. “It was never about health care. It was about control.”
And that control, Dr. Carson says, mirrors one of the most infamous “-ism”’s the U.S. fought to destroy during the 20th century: socialism. Later in the speech, Dr. Carson compared the new health care reform to principles adopted by Vladimir Lenin, saying that “Socialized medicine is the keystone in the establishment of a socialist state.”
The comment came as a surprise to some in the room, but Dr. Carson followed with “but I would say if you know anything about history, how could you not bring it up?”
Hinting further at socialistic ideals, Dr. Carson closed with remarks on the absence of mandated lawmaker participation in health care reform.
If the executive and legislative branches are not forced to participate while the remainder of the population is, the doctor added, then “That’s not America, it’s Russia.”
