Do you ever get the feeling that someone’s watching you? Now that you live in Obama’s America, you’re probably right to have that feeling. We’ve already learned that NSA is logging your phone call data and PRISM is reading your emails. It turns out that the FBI is watching more people more often too. Since 2009, when Barack Obama took office, FBI requests for data on national security grounds have increased by 1000%!
In 2007, when he began to run for the presidency, Obama promised that, if he were president, “I will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists, without undermining our Constitution and our freedom.” In fact, since he’s become President, Obama’s law enforcement agency has become 1,000 times more intrusive.
The Left is obsessed with the brief heyday of Joe McCarthy, famed Communist hunter, and the longer heyday of J. Edgar Hoover, the man who spied on all Americans. To them, those two are the evil Republican poster children – never mind that in McCarthy’s case he was right that the military and the government were riddled with actual Communist spies. In the perpetually repeated Democrat school of history, brave Democrats protected America from the scourge of right-wing “fascism.”
It turns out that the problem for them was never the fascism part, it was the “right-wing” part. Now that their own leaders are in charge of the instruments of power and, thanks to modern technology, are abusing it in a way never before possible, significant numbers of Democrats say it’s all good. According to a Pew poll, almost twelve years after 9/11, 64% of Democrats think it’s acceptable for the government to spy on them.
They’re also more than comfortable with having the Obama government use its main instrument of power – the IRS – to spy on political opponents. In fact, members of the younger generation are openly grateful for that abuse of power. It’s the rare Leftist organization the sticks to its principles. I never thought I’d say this, but kudos to the ACLU for recognizing a major assault on civil liberties and bringing suit against the Obama administration.
