Only the sickest of the sick would coldly, clinically shoot a baby in the face. Adam Lanza did it to dozens of children. And in Brunswick, Georgia, a young man did it to one little baby. De’Marquis Elkin deliberately murdered 13-month-old Antonio Santiago because Antonio’s mother, whom Elkin and an accomplice wanted to rob, had no money on her.
Sherry West was walking along a quiet street in Brunswick, with baby Antonio in stroller, when 17-year-old Elkins and a 14-year-old companion suddenly confronted her, waving a gun, and demanding money. West cried as she told the Associated Press how Elkins deliberately slaughtered her child because he viewed it as the reason she had no money to give to him:
He asked me for money and I said I didn’t have it,” she said. “When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They’re expensive. And he kept asking and I just said ‘I don’t have it.’ And he said, ‘Do you want me to kill your baby?’ And I said, ‘No, don’t kill my baby!’
Elkins ignored her pleas. Instead, he fired four shots. The first into the ground, the second at West’s head, the third into her leg . . . and the fourth? The fourth:
The boy proceeded to go around to the stroller and he shot my baby in the face. And then he just shoved me when I started screaming and he ran down London Street with the little boy.
Neighbors remember Antonio as a happy, cheerful little baby, who was clearly the apple of West’s eye. The terrible irony of the attack is that, back in 2008 in New Jersey, West’s 17-year old son Shaun Glassey was part of a group of boys armed with knives who were trying to ambush another teen. The teen managed to fight back, and stabbed Glassey with his own knife, killing him.
The Left is extremely proud of itself for substituting government “love” for conventional morality. At every opportunity – in politics, in the courts, and in the schools – the Left attacks conventional morality. Then, when children behave without the semblance of morality or human decency, they turn around and blame guns. Guns are merely objects, just as knives or bats are. The problem is that our society is busy creating the most dangerous weapons of all: young people with no conscience.
