It’s becoming ever more obvious that President Obama views the sequester, not as a way to trim out-of-control federal spending, but as a political tool to buy votes and break his enemies. Obama first came up with the sequester idea as a way to bully the Republicans in the debt limit battle. When Republicans decided to embrace the sequester as a way to trim federal growth by about $85 billion a year, Obama switched to using it as a scare tactic, threatening children, elderly people, and veterans. Now that the sequester is in place, Obama is once again trying to manipulate it to his advantage:
According to a report from Fox News, the Obama administration is going for a double whammy – cutting back on the number of inspectors who keep America’s food supply safe while simultaneously partnering with the Mexican government to help educate Mexican immigrants about food stamp availability in America:
Salmonella outbreaks. E. coli outbreaks. Millions of dollars in economic losses.
These are among the scenarios the Obama administration warned about last month as it claimed the sequester would force the U.S. Department of Agriculture to furlough meat inspectors.
But while the administration prepares to take that step, it continues to pursue a “partnership” with the Mexican government to “raise awareness” about food stamps among immigrants from that country. When a top Senate Republican proposed cutting off funds for that program last week — in the form of an amendment to a budget resolution — Democrats on the Budget Committee shot it down.
Unless the Obama administration plans to cut down on illegal immigration by exposing Mexican immigrants to salmonella poisoning, this latest example of cuts in one area and greater expenditure in another area is open to one meaning only: Even as Obama threatens those Americans who believe that the government needs to stop spending so much money by putting the American food supply at risk, he’s planning to buy future votes from a demographic (Latin American immigrants, illegal or otherwise) that he believes will keep the Democrat Party in power forever.
