Fox announced on Monday that they would be canceling a show that changed the landscape of television forever.

Fox has revealed that the next season of American Idol will be it’s last. American Idol was once the most popular show on television by far. It launched the careers of artists like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, and it created a new genre of reality TV that has helped make shows like The Voice successful.

However, in the end it was The Voice that did idol in, as more and more viewers flocked to watch the NBC singing competition instead.

Executives at Fox announced that next year’s 15th season of American Idol will be a season-long celebration of the show’s legacy.

This news comes just a week after Fox cancelled The Mindy Project after three seasons. The show’s creator and star Mindy Kaling, however, has expressed hope that the show will be picked up for a fourth season on Hulu.

“I love seeing #themindyproject trending!” Kaling wrote in a text message to Time Magazine. “I can just say that I don’t think it’s over for these characters.”

In addition, Fox has cancelled The Following, which stars Kevin Bacon, after three seasons. The series was very popular when it debuted in 2013, but it has struggled with ratings during it’s latest season.

Canceling these shows, which were each once major hits for Fox, implies that the network is trying to reboot their image. It remains to be seen what type of channel they will become next.
