Classy Robert De Niro Makes Announcement About NYPD

January 5, 2015 1:58pm PST

Robert De Niro just rose a couple notches on the classy totem pole. He has a message for his fellow New Yorkers- we take care of our own.

The award winning actor joined forces with the New York Daily News in their efforts to raise much-needed funds for the families of murdered NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“At times like these, New Yorkers know what to do,” De Niro told The Daily News. “Thank you for joining me in contributing to the Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos families.”

In case you didn’t know, Ramon and Liu were fatally shot in an execution-style murder by a black Muslim gang member while they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20.

“It’s not only our brave policemen and women who sacrifice for us, it’s also their families,” De Niro added. “They’ve done their duty, and now it’s time to do ours.”

Ramos left behind his wife and two boys; Liu had only been married three months when they were slaughtered in cold blood.

Some donors to The Daily News’ fund send their own words of support along with their gifts.

Typical was this message from Lawrence and Evelyn Macchia, of Queens, New York: “May Officers Ramos and Liu forever rest in peace, and their families know they are not alone in their grief. May this never happen again.”

Yes, Evelyn, this type of thing should never happen to our boys in blue. This is saddening and disgusting, and these families deserve to have their daddies and husbands at home with them where they belong. Kids shouldn’t spend Father’s Day at a cemetery, and no wife should be a widow after 3 months of marriage.

Kudos to you, Mr. De Niro for raising awareness of these fallen servants with your name recognition. You are a good man, doing good for those who served and protected us.
