The Islamic State released footage on Sunday showing the severed head of U.S. aid worker Peter Kassig. The video was notably different from previous execution propaganda from the terrorist organization, like the videos showing the deaths of James Foley and Steven Sotloff. Sunday’s footage did not show the actual beheading and Kassig was not forced to make a scripted last speech. Now we may know the answer behind these peculiarities and a bit more about the last hostage ISIS has left – an American woman who is just 26-years-old.

An inside source has revealed that Kassig likely refused to make a statement for the ISIS video, knowing his death was imminent. A source with experience in hostage negotiations commented, “I suspect that Pete knew this was coming and that he refused to talk.” MailOnline suggested that Kassig, who a month before his execution had converted to Islam, may have insisted on reciting verses from the Qur’an instead of a canned speech, frustrating his captors.

Additionally, the last letter Kassig wrote to his parents hinted that he knew he was going to die. The letter, received by the Kassigs on June 2, said:

I am obviously pretty scared to die but the hardest part is not knowing, wondering, hoping, and wondering if I should even hope at all. If I do die, I figure that at least you and I can seek refuge and comfort in knowing that I went out as a result of trying to alleviate suffering and helping those in need. Don’t worry Dad, if I go down, I won’t go thinking anything but what I know to be true. That you and mom love me more than the moon and the stars.

The name of the 26-year-old woman in the clutches of the Islamic State has not been released. $6 million has been demanded by ISIS for her freedom, which is relatively low, compared to other ransom demands which have exceeded $100 million. It is highly unlikely that the amount of the woman’s ransom makes much difference though, as the United States has a long-standing policy not to negotiate with terrorists.
