Antonio Smith became angered on August 20, when his mother refused to give him a cookie. At 9-years-old, his frustration got the better of him and he ran from his home to a vacant lot in the neighborhood to blow off some steam. This move turned out to be a fatal mistake.

Smith was spotted by members of the Sircon City faction of the Gangster Disciples street gang, as he passed the time in the abandoned lot in the Greater Grand Crossings neighborhood. The thugs suspected him of being a snitch and warning rival gang members of their presence, so they shot him in cold blood.

Finally, a month after the shooting which rocked an entire community, three Chicago thugs have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Superintendent Garry McCarthy thanked the community for their help in catching the gangbangers responsible for Smith’s untimely death, saying, “The community refused to stay silent and provided us with vital information that culminated in the arrest of these three offenders.”

From left, Jabari Williams, 22, Derrick Allmon, 19, and Michael Baker, 19, have all been charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death of Antonio Smith.

There are so many facets to this story, and all are incredibly upsetting. Smith was a victim of circumstance. He grew up in a neighborhood where gang violence rules the streets to such a degree that even though he was a mere 9-years-old, he was presumed to already be a gang member. When I think of what strangers might perceive my own children to be, many things come to mind, but no one in their right mind would think any of them are gang members. Yet, they are not much different from Antonio Smith. They, too, get upset when I deny them treats. They, too, play sports and were baptized at the local church. The only difference is that they have the advantage of being raised in an area where gang violence is the exception, not the rule. Antonio Smith has been labeled the youngest victim of gang violence this year in the Chicago area, a disheartening legacy. He didn’t ask to be raised in the midst of gangbangers who kill 9-year-old snitches, but ultimately, he fell victim to his surroundings.

It is hard to imagine a more tragic story than this. Still, one unsung detail is startlingly apparent. Even thought Smith was just 9-year-old, with his whole life ahead of him, and an irrefutably innocent victim of black gang violence, there has been no media outrage over his death. Do you think the response would have been different had his killers been white? Tell us in the comments section.
