Republicans Not Letting BLM Off The Hook For Bundy Ranch Standoff

The tense situation between Cliven Bundy and the BLM over his Nevada cattle ranch has largely died down, but there are issues surrounding the ordeal which still need to be resolved. This week, House Republicans participated in a hearing regarding the matter.
Participating lawmakers found that the BLM should not have been heavily armed when they responded to the situation as Bundy’s cattle ranch. As California Rep. Tom McClintock put it:
“Whether Bundy was right or wrong, was the BLM’s response reasonable? Anyone watching that unfolding fiasco can answer it was completely insane. Local law enforcement knew the circumstances, knew the people involved and would exercise much better judgment nine times out of 10. So I ask once again, why are we arming land managers?”

McClintock echoes the sentiments of many who believe that the federal government is overly militarizing it’s agents.
Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva was the only Democrat present at the hearing, and even he agreed that the BLM was guilty of using excessive force.
