For most, Memorial Day is a time to spend with friends and family to reflect on the sacrifices that the men and women in our military have made for our nation. However this year police believe that hundreds of teens made their way to the beach for a different reason, to cause mayhem.

Police in Ft. Lauderdale ended up arresting dozens of people Monday night during what they described as a volatile scene after riots broke out. Police said that they had to deal with two separate incidents in the city.

According to police, around 5:00 p.m. hundreds of young people made their way to the beach with the sole intentions of causing trouble. Fort Lauderdale Police said they had to suit up in riot gear in order to deal with the volatile crowds.

Detective Deana Greenlaw described several reports of “individuals who were reaching into vehicles, striking drivers. We have reports individuals who were jumping on top of taxicabs.”

Officials also said that the group of young people scattered out to the streets when police arrived to break up their fighting.

Greenlaw added “This was something that was planned through these individuals and they were coming to Fort Lauderdale Beach Park for this purpose, to cause a problem.”

Witnesses described the scene as out of control and said they saw the cops using pepper spray on the rioters. However even with the scene being so chaotic, police said that there were no reports of any injuries.

Glad to see they’re keeping it classy down in Florida.
