The former owner of La Nueva Victoria, a popular Chinese restaurant on Broadway, was left bloodied and bruised after a run in with the NYPD for a jaywalking infraction and now he’s suing the city for $5 million dollars because of it.

Kang Chun Wong, 84, lives on the upper West Side of New York City and has for the last 50 years without a problem. Well not too long ago he was walking across an intersection when the “walk” sign changed from “walk” to “don’t walk” halfway through his crossing. This prompted police to stop him and ask for his ID under an initiative targeting jaywalkers that Commissioner Bill Bratton ordered throughout the city.

The cop stopped him and asked for his ID, which Wong gladly complied with, but then things went south for reasons unknown. The cop quietly walked away with Wong’s ID, without giving him a reason at all. When Wong approached the officer to retrieve his ID, the officer pulled out his handcuffs and called for backup, which quickly came to subdue Wong who was just standing there. The officers who arrived on the scene grabbed Wong and slammed him into a nearby wall, causing the elderly man to fall to the ground, knocking him unconscious and cutting his head, leaving bruises on his arm and ribs and causing him to be rushed to the hospital.

“I was very puzzled and I was very scared,” he said. “I had no idea why I had been stopped. I used Cantonese and said give me back my ID,” Wong said.

Wong is outraged at the system he has believed in and followed his entire life that turned around and mistreated him for no apparent reason. He said that he’s always respected the police and he had detectives and officers in his restaurant all the time, further adding to his confusion on the matter.

As a result Wong is suing the city for $5 million, and is discussing his options now with his attorney and his son.

His attorney is outraged at the incident, “How could this happen in this city today?” Sanford Rubenstein said. “We have a mayor who is a proud progressive. We have a police commissioner who has committed to improved community relations.”
